1920s–1960s
In 1921, Henry moved his family from Brooklyn to Forest Hills, in Queens. He ventured into real estate in 1922, when he used the proceeds of his father’s estate to buy several buildings on a large piece of land in Glendale for his business. He found he had bought more buildings than he could use. In order to attract tenants, he opened a commercial garage and hired some mechanics. At the time, there were few repair shops and trucks were notoriously unreliable. Henry’s “mixed use” of property was a tremendous success. By 1946, when he died, Atlas Terminals consisted of 31 buildings with almost 800,000 square feet of space. His son Monroe continued to expand the Terminals and built other buildings in New York City, including 555 Fifth Avenue and 630 Third Avenue.
